Ministry of Education Language Immersion Award for Students
Applications for 2018 awards close on 19th May 2017
Students can, through the Ministry of Education Language Immersion Awards, live the semester of a lifetime – as a local – not as a tourist. The Awards are fully funded by the Ministry and students are supported by AFS Intercultural Programmes who manage the Awards for teachers and students. Up to 15 Language Immersion Awards are available to students applying in Year 11 or 12.
It really is an experience of a lifetime, a chance to experience and learn about another culture by living like a local, immersed in the language being taught. Students will be hosted by an AFS host family, be fully involved in the life of a local family and community, while growing as a person and, importantly, being immersed in the language.
Applications are open until May 19, 2017 and students can complete their online application at www.afs.org.nz/lia there is one round per year.
Students must be currently studying one or more of these languages: Chinese, Cook Islands Maori, Vagahau Niue, Gagana Tokelau, French, German, Korean, Japanese, Gagana Samoa, and Spanish, be or turn 16 by the date of departure and be studying that language at school and/or the Correspondence School.
Costs of the programme, including travel, insurance and visas are met by AFS; selected participants will be responsible for their personal spending money. For more information or copies of case studies of past students please contact firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 04 903 2275.
