Bravo to Madame Naomi Connolly from Paraparaumu College, who after 20 years, has very proudly set up a long-term exchange programme with a school in Avignon. She visited two of her students, Abi and Rhlyee, who spent 3 months there this summer. They hosted students in Term 3 last year and this year there are now six students from Paraparaumu College going over. Above is a photo of Abi and Rhylee by the famous Pont D'Avignon.

Napier Girls High School is participating in the New Zealand - Switzerland exchange 2025. We look forward to welcoming our French-speaking Swiss students who arrive in August. The girls are enjoying getting to know each other so far.

On 30th May, language teachers from Hawke's Bay gathered for a full day of PLD with the theme of motivating students in the classroom.
The keynote speaker was Liam Printer, who was stunning as a presenter. If you haven't yet subscribed to the Motivated Classroom podcast, you're missing out! There are 102 amazing podcasts to listen to around using the Comprehensible Input method of teacher. It has to be the best languages PD ever! If you are short of time, just listen to the first 10 and you'll have a good understanding of how this method of story-telling and story co-creation works.
We also were fortunate to have representatives from each language with us for sessions focused on the marking of NCEA External Assessments. Getting your marking brain aligned with that of the markers was invaluable to us all.
Christchurch Term 2 2025
In Term 2 term many teachers in Canterbury were fortunate to attend the NZALT Langsem, held at Papanui School. One of the workshops which we attended was led by Florence Lyons from Tui Tuia. The title of the workshop was Le français sans frontières. Florence gave us many ideas about how to teach about other French speaking countries around the world.

Auckland Term 3 2025
On Tuesday 5 August we held our annual French Quiz for Year 12 and 13 students. 75 students from 8 schools descended - some in costume, all with a winning attitude. We had quiz rounds, spot prizes, dance off challenges, conversation meet ups and of course – Zumba!
We loved meeting our Francophone friends from EGGS, MAGS, St. Cuthbert’s College, Takapuna Grammar, Northcote College, Westlake Boys and Baradene College.
Baradene College took out the trophy with 1st place
2nd and 3rd places - St. Mary's College
Best Team Name - L'Hexa-gang (St Cuthbert's)
Best Individual Costume - Baradene College
Best Team Costume - Westlake Boys
Etienne came to Auckland on Thursday 31 July for a concert at St. Mary's College. An hour packed with energy, music, French, movement, screaming and laughter. The girls loved every minute of it and clamoured for photos and autographs well after the bell rang!
During International Languages Week, a long time planned event occurred where St. Mary's, Carmel and Baradene College senior students came together for an afternoon of crêpes, conversation and quizzing. On June 11th approximately 35 students from Years 12 and 13 ate, chatted and laughed in across-school groups. The students were very excited to meet each other and a lovely time was had by all!

Year 10 French at Woodford House won the NZALT video competition for their year level, about the benefits of learning a second language. The video is about their trip to Tahiti. Guess what we spent the prize money on!
Wellington 2025
The annual pétanque competition between Kapiti College and Paraparaumu College brought excitement and camaraderie to the Kāpiti Pétanque Club.
Students from both schools immersed themselves in the traditional French game, mastering techniques and strategies to score points.
They even picked up some French phrases like “bien lancé” (well thrown) and “on a gagné” (we won), adding an authentic touch to the experience.
A highlight of the event was the presentation of a brand-new trophy to Paraparaumu College, dedicated to the late Graham Hooper, a former club president.

An intense evening of debate made for much fun for a large group of students from across the isthmus on June 3rd. Debating the merits of AI and the future of the planet was no small feat in French but was also very rewarding for those involved. Congratulations to Kristin School for their win and many thanks to Pierre, Melissa and co. at the Alliance for a very well run event!

Christchurch 2024
2024 we welcomed the first Tahiti exchange students at St Margaret's College. The exchange was planned since 2019 when the initiative was rudely disrupted by Covid19. However, we persisted and are delighted to say that the first group of girls went to Papeete in September 2023 and the first Tahitian group visited us in February 2024. The next exchange is going to be in September 2024 and this time we invited Christ's College to the party.
Let's support our French / French styled businesses. This spreadsheet (link below) will be a continual evolution - mostly Auckland based. Taking your students to a French restaurant, for crêpes, picking up pâtisseries - or just ordering something online - there is something for everyone. The pictures to the left are of a rather good pain au chocolat from Copain - on Mackelvie Street, Grey Lynn and an also rather good nutella crêpe from Ponsonby Crêpes! Feel free to add and businesses you know! https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1iTtAA7J5urLOJQa0ZeGJvTaAjIHzV8gsDQNssPVcA0g/edit?usp=sharing

ETIENNE IN CONCERT!
On Thursday 1st August St. Mary's College hosted Etienne for an hour of French musical fun. Etienne gave it his all - as did our students. The ambiance was electric, the dance moves were wild and the noise was off the scale. Highly recommend having Etienne if you are able - a great motivator for students taking French!
